"Raised By Wolves" [28 Feb 2008|02:13pm]

saellys
Hi all! I just found this community and I'm terribly excited about it. Expect many interior page scans in the not-too-distant future, but for now I'll show you the cover to the book I just overhauled:

I got the book itself for fifty-five cents at a thrift store. It's entirely in Japanese, and apparently it's a manual for the care and keeping of babies. It even has a couple pull-out pages with tables that illustrate I know not what. I can't wait to start on the interior. I'm gonna call it "Raised By Wolves".

It's 8.5" x 6", and the cover is kraft paper with origami paper accent. The picture in the window is an amazing Polaroid from a photo album I got at a swap meet. Stay tuned for views of the inside.

Tarot Journal Cover [02 Dec 2007|07:08pm]

tarot journal front cover

Yesterday I helped clevermanka art up the cover of a journal. While I was helping her, I arted up the cover of an old book to use as my tarot journal. The book is an old book titled "This Is South Africa." You can't tell from the scan, but the whole front is covered in gold glitter glue. I also but copious layers of Golden's gloss varnish on it and I love the shininess of it.

It's a combination of acrylic paint, collage, packing tape transfer, glitter glue, alphabet stamps (Pistolgrip) and hand-carved stamps.

It was the first time I've gotten to make any art in a long time, and it was so fun! I'll gesso and collage over the pages in order to use them for my journal.

I just joined this community, and will promptly slip back into my usual habit of lurking and sponging up information and inspiration, but I thought that I'd share the two ABs I've managed to complete. I have three others started, and about five more in my head that want out.

The first one, Horrorvenus, is a tribute to one of my best friends. I took a super-thick book, glued most of into a block, and carved a deep niche for a statue I'd zombified.

The second one, Clockwork Tooth, was the result of my getting my wisdom teeth extracted.

Black Widow is a booklet ATC that I created, and sort-of counts as an AB, but I don't really think of it as being one. It's just a very elaborate ATC. *laugh*

The ones in progress - the Pervy Bible, Portfolio, and Exotica all have a few pages done, but I don't have photos of them yet. I probably won't show them off until they're actually complete, whenever that is.

acrylics brand question [14 Jun 2006|11:32am]

dindrane
Do you have an acrylics preference with regard to Liquitex vs. Winsor & Newton vs. Golden? I know they say not to mix brands, lest they not blend well, and while I always *have* mixed, I wonder if maybe I should choose a brand and stick with it.

I just read that you can age paper with lemon juice.

Does anyone know if this ruins the archival state of your work?

Very Quiet Community [04 Feb 2006|11:56am]

Hi there,

Where is everyone? This group is far too quiet. I want to see pictures of your projects, read about your experiments with altered books.

I adore altering books and love to talk about them and see pictures. Anybody got any art they would like to share?

Intro and Shaped Books [18 Jan 2006|11:55am]

artygaluk
Hello,

I have been in this community for a while now and I don't think I have made an introduction. About 2 years ago I heard about altered books and I haven't stopped since. The only thing holding me up at the moment is my full-time art course and part-time job, but I finish the course in May and have promised myself a self-indulgent art fest then!

Meantime, I have been having great success making and selling my shaped books on Ebay ( http://tinyurl.com/a7xjh), they are great fun to do and great fun to use in altered book art.

Image Hosting by PictureTrail.com

I thought I would share some pictures here as these are all I have been doing altered book wise lately, except for a little board book (shaped obviously, LOL) that is in progress at the moment - which I aim to submit to Art-e-Zine.

If you would like to see more pictures of my art, there are loads in my picturetrail account: www.picturetrail.com/artygal

I would love feedback!!

Also, what is everyone else up to?

I was recently introduced to altering books and I was flipping through a book about different methods and in reference to image transfer without destroying the original image, they keep mentioning gel medium and I have no idea what that is or where I would be able to find it. What is this stuff? OR does anyone have other suggestions for methods to transfer images. Thanks!

First, Dru got a paper hat. My 8 yr old figured out Dru is getting married without prompting, but doesn't ike the hat. Working on that....

Made this pretty background paper with a stencil and acrylic gold paint on rose paper, And lastly, Red Headed Medieval Girl got a facing page. Made the paper over the folded page with tissue and copper metallic acrylic. Whee!!
